If your OINP EOI, job offer or application was caught by the June 2026 redesign, here is what each situation means, which options remain open, and what to avoid doing while you wait.

Who is stranded and what it means

Three groups were caught by the June 2026 OINP redesign, and the right response differs for each. If your EOI was in the pool under a closed stream, it was automatically withdrawn — the pool no longer exists. If you had a registered job offer under a closed stream, the registration was withdrawn with the stream. If you had an application in progress when the streams closed, its processing depends on Ontario’s transition rules — check the OINP portal for your status.

TL;DR

  1. EOIs under closed streams were automatically withdrawn — a new OWP EOI is required.
  2. Job offers registered under closed streams were withdrawn with the stream; employers can re-register.
  3. Applications in progress may continue processing — check your OINP portal status.
  4. Protect your temporary status independently: a nomination does not extend a work permit.
  5. Do not register a new EOI until your employer has a compliant job offer under OWP.

Option 1: pivot to the Ontario Workforce Priority stream

For most stranded applicants, the OWP stream is the path forward. Your employer needs a genuine, full-time job offer that meets the OWP wage and experience requirements, and then registers an EOI for you. The scoring factors are stricter than the old streams — TEER level, hourly wage, Canadian earnings history, Ontario work experience with the employer, education, language and job location all matter. If your job offer was marginal under the old rules, a revised offer or a different role can change your score materially.

Option 2: federal Express Entry

If you have Canadian work experience or are close to obtaining it — for example, after a PGWP — Express Entry may be faster than waiting for Ontario draws to resume. A nomination from Ontario adds 600 CRS points, but a competitive CRS score alone can get you invited. Compare the routes in our PNP vs Express Entry guide.

Option 3: extend your status and wait

Waiting is a valid strategy only if your status is secure. Apply for a work permit extension well before expiry — see our work permit guide — and keep your scoring factors current. Ontario’s EOI portal opened on August 4, 2026, and no OWP draws had run as of late October; expect the first draws to be competitive.

What not to do

  • Do not register a new EOI without a compliant job offer. The old-stream shortcuts are gone.
  • Do not let your status expire. Falling out of status complicates every later option.
  • Do not pay for “guaranteed” grandfathering. Ontario has not announced automatic grandfathering of old EOIs; anything claiming otherwise is speculation.

When to get a licensed review

Stranded situations involve status, timing and multi-route decisions that are easy to get wrong in the wrong order. A licensed consultant can review your exact situation — your EOI history, your employer’s options, your permit expiry and your federal eligibility — and sequence the steps. Our paid consultation is a fixed-scope 30-minute review.

Was my OINP EOI automatically withdrawn?

EOIs in the pool under a closed stream were automatically withdrawn when the streams closed. You need a new EOI under the Ontario Workforce Priority stream.

Can I get my old EOI grandfathered?

Ontario has not announced automatic grandfathering of old EOIs. Check official Ontario updates for any transition measures; our stranded-applicant guide tracks the current state.

What if my application was in progress when the streams closed?

Check your OINP portal status. Ontario’s transition rules determine whether applications in progress continue processing. If your status is unclear, a licensed review can help you decide next steps.

Should I wait for OWP draws or try Express Entry?

It depends on your CRS score, your Canadian work experience and your permit expiry. Compare both routes in our PNP vs Express Entry guide, and protect your temporary status either way.
