Study Permits & Pathways for International Students — 2026 Update

A dated informational overview of Canada’s study-permit system and post-graduation pathways for international students — updated 2026-10-27 against official IRCC sources. For application help, see our study permit service page.

The study-permit system today

Canada’s international-student system has seen significant recent changes: provincial attestation letter requirements, increased proof-of-funds thresholds, and PGWP field-of-study/institution rules. The practical consequence: your program choice now affects your post-graduation work rights, and financial documentation standards are higher than a few years ago.

Key pathway map (study → work → PR)

  1. Study permit at an eligible DLI (verify PAL/TAL and funds requirements).
  2. Post-Graduation Work Permit — if your program and institution meet current PGWP rules; validity generally matches program length (with caps and conditions — verify current rules).
  3. Canadian work experience → Canadian Experience Class (Express Entry), and/or
  4. Ontario employer → OWP stream — Ontario’s current nomination route, including a 3-month recent-graduate experience provision for eligible Ontario graduates. See the OWP guide and the former student-stream explainer.

What changed for graduates (OINP redesign)

Ontario’s former job-offer-free graduate streams (International Student, Masters, PhD) closed in June 2026. Graduates now build PR through employer-led OWP or federal experience programs — planning your study-to-PR sequence early matters more than before.

FAQ

Is Canada still accepting international students?

Yes — with updated requirements (attestations, funds thresholds, PGWP conditions). Check IRCC’s official pages for the current rules.

Which programs give a PGWP?

PGWP eligibility depends on institution type, program length and field-of-study rules IRCC has updated — verify against the official lists before enrolling.
