IRCC relaunched its Application Status Tracker for work permits, study permits, visitor visas, Express Entry and family sponsorship. Here is what it shows — and what it doesn't.
Table of Contents

The tracker is back

IRCC has brought its Application Status Tracker back online. The tool covers work-permit, study-permit, visitor-visa, Express Entry and family-sponsorship applicants, and shows the current stage of your application in the IRCC queue. It went offline for maintenance and is now available again.

⚡

TL;DR

  1. The tracker covers work permits, study permits, visitor visas, Express Entry and family sponsorship.
  2. It shows the current stage of your application — received, in process, or a decision stage.
  3. It does not show refusal reasons or officer notes — GCMS notes are the way to get those.
  4. Status labels change when IRCC acts, not on a schedule.
  5. Check the tracker and your emails together — some decisions arrive by mail only.

What the tracker shows

The tracker displays the stage your application has reached: received, in process, approved, refused, or awaiting final documents. It updates when IRCC takes an action on your file — it does not run on a schedule, so a status that does not change for a while does not mean nothing is happening.

What the tracker does not show

  • Refusal reasons — the tracker shows that a decision was made, not why. The decision letter arrives separately, and GCMS notes are the way to see the officer’s actual reasoning.
  • Processing-time estimates for your file — the tracker shows the stage, not a predicted finish date.
  • Messages — IRCC sends some messages only by email or mail; the tracker does not replace them.

How to use it well

Check the tracker together with your emails and your IRCC secure account. If your status is unclear, or a stage has been stuck for a long time compared with the published processing time, GCMS notes are the way to see the officer’s actual reasoning. Our processing time guide covers the PNP side, and our contact page is the way to get a licensed review of your file.

What does the IRCC Application Status Tracker show?

It shows the current stage of your application — received, in process, approved, refused, or awaiting final documents. It updates when IRCC acts on your file.

Does the tracker show refusal reasons?

No. The tracker shows that a decision was made, not why. The decision letter arrives separately, and GCMS notes are the way to see the officer’s actual reasoning.

Which application types does the tracker cover?

Work permits, study permits, visitor visas, Express Entry and family sponsorship applications.

What if my status hasn’t changed for a long time?

The tracker updates when IRCC acts, not on a schedule. Compare your stage with the published processing times; if your file is far beyond the normal range, consider a licensed review.
